Professor Astro Cat

KS1 had an amazing visit from the Britten Sinfonia with their musical version of Professor Astro Cat!

It was super, we heard the trombone, viola, clarinet, piano, snare drum and glockenspiel in amazing and exciting ways! We even became musicians and accompanists ourselves!

School of Rock

On Friday, our hall was transformed into a stage, complete with studio lighting and a smoke machine, to set the tone for our first ever St John’s Rock Concert!  Our visiting musician, Pino Soccio has been teaching drumming lessons to a group of children, and supported by our very own guitarist, Simon Hollingsworth we were treated to an inspiring performance.

We sang along to ‘We Will Rock You’, ‘Vienna’, ‘Living on a Prayer’ and many more hits.

The audience were awe-struck and amazed at the children’s musicality and professionalism.  We are all hoping this is the beginning of many more concerts! A big thank you to Pino and Simon for putting together an amazing show and a special congratulations to all the musicians who took part.

Peterborough Sings

On Thursday 21st of March, Peterborough Sings invited the Year 4s to take part in a day of singing culminating in a performance at The Cresset. Throughout the day the children were treated to a performance from the orchestra, met and got to question two musicians and rehearsed with the conductor. All of the Year 4 teachers were so impressed with how brave and resilient the children were throughout their fantastic performance of Truly Scrumptious and Singing in the Rain.

We had so many lovely comments about how well-behaved, polite and respectful our children were – they were a real credit to St. John’s! A special thank you to all the parents for helping children practise at home and coming to support their performance at the end of the day. Well done, Year 4!

Music mentoring

My name is Seb Gee and I am a professional drummer. I have been teaching one to one drumming lessons at St John’s Church School since February 2014. I also run music mentoring sessions for children who the teachers feel might benefit from them. This gives them a chance to have a short break from their usual class atmosphere and learn to play the drums and other instruments, or even just talk about their day. As well a musician, I am also a professional photographer/videographer. I have produced a number of videos for St John’s during my time here. It’s a pleasure working at St John’s as the children are always very enthusiastic and committed.
