Welcome to Reception.

Our Reception unit aims for all children to become independent, motivated, and engaged learners. We hope for every child to be a confident learner who loves and enjoys learning new things.

Our classroom for Hedgehogs & Bear Cubs has an open planned design which prompts an exciting, stimulating, and enriched environment for the children. It is split into different areas of learning with a variety of resources in each, to help give children different learning experiences. They can use these experiences to help build on existing and new concepts to extend their knowledge and understanding, with effective scaffolding from the staff.

We follow the EYFS curriculum which is play-based learning which enables the foundation team to promote a balanced (CIL) Child-initiated and adult-led learning timetable whilst enhancing exploratory and first-hand experiences. This gives children the opportunity to choose from a range of activities to enhance their own learning and challenge themselves both inside and outside, focusing on 7 different areas of the curriculum.

These areas are the most important to embed and develop first in the young mind of our children to develop their social skills, communication, language, independence, and love of learning.

We value every child as a unique individual and plan our curriculum on the children’s interests. We believe very much in providing the children with first-hand, real-life experiences to enrich their learning and to make it purposeful. We cater for all children’s needs and plan extra support and intervention for any child who may need it. We value the importance of outdoor learning.

We teach reading through:

  • Read Write inc phonics scheme

  • Hearing your child read individually

  • Sharing texts in Literacy and other subjects

We strongly believe that parents have an invaluable contribution towards their own child’s learning. We like to develop and foster good relationships with our parents to ensure that children achieve their very best and reach their full potential. We value parent’s views and understand that they are ultimately their child’s first educators. We welcome parents openly and encourage participation throughout the year.

What do I need to remember to bring in?

Every day:
Remember to put your child’s reading books into their book bag, ensuring there has been a comment left in their reading journal.

Water bottle – named and filled with fresh water.

PE kit:
Both classes will have PE on Monday and Thursday. Please provide your children with appropriate clothing for indoor and outdoor learning.

Forest school:

Reception class provide warm, waterproof splash suits for the children but we do ask that you provide your child with wellington boots all year round and a hat, gloves and scarf in the winter months. Bear Cubs forest school is on Thursday each week and Hedgehogs forest school is on Fridays.

Homework:
Homework given out each Friday either directly to your child or added on Tapestry. We encourage to show your children’s learning at home via Tapestry and through their homework journal.

Curriculum Information

At St John's our Reception team are very excited to be teaching your children the early stages of reading and writing in a fun and stimulating approach. We follow an enriched Scheme called Read Write Inc as our daily phonic sessions. We are starting our phonic sessions in Week 3 of this Autumn term.

WOW Writing!

You can help your child to develop their writing with a variety of fun activities. Your child to become a successful writer they need to develop fine and gross motor skills.

Here are some ideas to support their fine motor activities at home:

Some more ideas:

  • Using large paintbrushes and water outside on the ground.

  • Using fingers in shaving foam or paint. (Can get a little messy, so don’t forget an apron!)

  • Writing using different tools eg chalk, pastel, crayons, pencils, pens.

  • Using playdough and squeezy soft balls- this will help to develop strength in the hands.

  • Using tools and scissors- this will help to develop control and strengthen the fingers.

  • Using giant tweezers and pegs – this will help to develop the pincer grip to hold a pencil

  • monkey bars- this will help to develop upper body strength.

Cursive Writing

In reception and throughout the school we promote cursive writing. Children in Reception will be learning how to write their letters using the Read, Write, Inc rhymes. Below is each cursive letter:
