At The Spirit Federation, our Music curriculum is designed to ignite a passion for creativity and excellence, deeply rooted in our mission to transform lives and inspire greatness in every child. We believe that music has the power to enrich the soul, foster emotional intelligence and unlock each child's unique potential. Aligned with our core values of trust, hope, faith, commitment, love, courage, and service, our curriculum ensures that every child experiences the joy of music while developing essential skills for the future.
Our curriculum, which spans from Reception (Nursery where applicable) to Year 6, is framed by three thought-provoking questions: What makes us who we are?; How does adversity inspire courage and creative possibilities? and In an ever-changing world, how can the choices we make have an impact? These questions not only guide children’ exploration of music but also empower them to use music as a tool for self-discovery, resilience, and creative expression. Through a comprehensive focus on musical notation, sound exploration, rhythm, melody, composition, and performance, our Music curriculum is a dynamic force in developing well-rounded, confident, and empathetic individuals who are ready to make a difference in the world.
Music is taught through a practical, enquiry-based approach, where children are encouraged to explore and experiment with a variety of sounds and instruments. They engage with everyday sounds, appraise diverse musical genres and artists and create original compositions using tools such as GarageBand, micro bits, and Chromebooks. Singing, body percussion, and instrumental work play a central role in developing both individual and group performance skills. Technology is integrated into lessons, with children using digital tools for composition, recording and performance.
Assessment is carried out through a range of strategies including teacher judgements, post-tests, AFL and weekly Kahoot quizzes, allowing teachers to monitor progress and adjust learning as needed. Additionally, enrichment opportunities such as trips, visits from musicians, and participation in music clubs and performances provide children with extended learning experiences, fostering a deeper connection with music.
By the end of their music education, children at The Spirit Federation will achieve musical literacy, with the ability to read and interpret basic notation, rhythms, and melodies. They will develop instrumental and vocal skills, confidently performing in both group and solo settings. children will also have the opportunity to express themselves creatively through composition and improvisation, using music as a tool for personal expression and emotional exploration. The curriculum nurtures cultural and spiritual awareness, helping children understand the role of music in different traditions and its ability to foster connection and community.
Additionally, children will become skilled in listening and appraising, developing the ability to reflect on and appreciate a wide range of musical styles and genres. Ultimately, the Music curriculum helps children grow into confident, resilient and empathetic individuals who are well-prepared to navigate the future with creativity and focus, as measured by their progress, engagement and performances in both curricular and extracurricular settings.
