Impact:

At The Spirit Federation, our Science curriculum is a cornerstone of our commitment to excellence and our belief that learning should be life-transforming. We aim to spark a deep curiosity about the natural world, fostering a passion for discovery that extends well beyond the classroom. Our curriculum, from Nursery (where applicable) through to Key Stage 2, is designed to empower children with the scientific knowledge, critical thinking skills, and inquisitive mindset necessary to thrive in a rapidly evolving world. Rooted in the principles of inquiry-based learning, it aligns with the National Curriculum and is underpinned by three essential questions: What makes us who we are?; How can the choices we make impact an ever-changing world?; and How does adversity inspire courage and creative possibilities? Through engaging topics such as Animals, Living Things, Materials, Electricity, Space, and Evolution, we seek not only to cultivate a lifelong love for science but to inspire children to become confident, independent thinkers who contribute to building a better future.

At The Spirit Federation, Science is taught through a dynamic blend of hands-on, inquiry-based activities that immerse children in the scientific process. Our approach is grounded in real-world experiences, ensuring that every lesson is engaging, relevant and meaningful. By incorporating field trips, environmental exploration and the use of scientific equipment, children are encouraged to observe, hypothesise, test and record data with precision. We prioritise diverse teaching methods that allow children to interact with science in authentic contexts, supported by continuous assessment through tools such as post quizzes, Kahoot assessments, and teacher judgments. Formative assessment strategies, including feedback and assessment for learning (AFL), guide each student's journey.

Our children are regularly engaged in performing tests, applying scientific vocabulary and using evidence to support their findings. Enrichment opportunities, such as science clubs, science week and our network of science ambassadors, provide further platforms for children to deepen their understanding, broaden their horizons and develop a sustained enthusiasm for scientific discovery.

The impact of our Science curriculum at The Spirit Federation is evident in the broad knowledge and critical thinking skills that children develop by the time they complete their primary education. They will be scientifically literate individuals, able to confidently observe, identify, classify and conduct scientific inquiries with a clear understanding of how to apply their knowledge to the world around them. Our children will leave us equipped with the ability to use scientific vocabulary fluently, present findings effectively and draw robust, evidence-based conclusions. More importantly, they will possess a lifelong curiosity and an inquisitive mindset that encourages them to ask critical questions and explore the answers with confidence.

The ultimate measure of our success goes beyond academic performance—it's reflected in the enthusiasm and curiosity our children show for science, their ability to apply their learning to new challenges and their preparation to navigate the future with courage, curiosity and creative problem-solving. In short, our curriculum develops innovative, resilient thinkers who are ready to embrace the complexities of the future.
