SAFEGUARDING
'St John's Church School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children
and expects all staff volunteers, parents and children to share this commitment.'
Prevent
School staff have a duty of care to safeguard children, the Prevent duty forms a part of the wider Safeguarding agenda outlined in “Working
Together to Safeguard Children (2018) and Keeping Children Safe in Education (2023). The Prevent duty is the only aspect of the counter-
terrorism strategy which operates before a crime has been committed as it aims to identify children/young people at risk, to intervene early in
order to support those who are susceptible and vulnerable to radicalisation. School staff understand Prevent, its purpose and that the focus is
to safeguard the pupil and ascertain the appropriate support, it is not about criminalising pupils.
Spirit Federation recognises that the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015 places a duty on schools to have due regard in preventing
pupils from being drawn into terrorism.
The Prevent Strategy has three main objectives:
● Respond to the ideological challenge of terrorism and the threat faced from those who promote it
● Prevent people from being drawn into terrorism and ensure that they are given appropriate advice and support
● Work with partners and agencies where there are risks of radicalisation which need to be addressed
