Tectonic plates and oranges - who knew?

Writer's picture: Lucy KentLucy Kent
This week the Gannets in 4AH have been exploring how mountains are formed when tectonic plates are put under pressure.

They replicated this using a peeled orange so that they could see first hand how the peel (tectonic plates) creates pressure on the orange (the Earth.) They discovered that this combined pressure, forces the ground (or Earth) to push upwards and interestingly these mountains (and volcanoes) can be found on land or sea. Some of them enjoyed eating the orange afterwards!
